Technologies

Technologies as part of the Western Australian Curriculum describes two distinct but related subjects:

  • Digital Technologies, in which students use computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement solutions.
  • Design and Technologies, in which students use design thinking and technologies to generate and produce solutions for authentic needs and opportunities

At Banksia Park Primary School, our technologies programs aim to develop students who are:

  • Critical thinkers
  • Interactive learners
  • Global citizens
  • Digitally literate.

Digital Technologies

Digital Technologies are a critical part of our students’ lives. Technology use is growing and changing every day and it is crucial that our students have both the technical competencies and cyber safety skills to enable them to be smart, safe and responsible digital citizens. When used effectively, technology is an important tool to transform student learning.

Students develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately. They access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school and in their lives beyond school. We recognise we have both a responsibility and an obligation to provide teaching and learning programs that embeds the use of ICT across all facets of the curriculum. This prepares students for the fast-changing technological world they are growing up in.

Every classroom is fitted with interactive smartboards and full wireless connectivity, with iPad devices accessible in all classrooms. Students have access to a dedicated computer lab as well as a variety of different robotic devices which are integrated in different year levels.

Cyber Safety, in conjunction with safe, ethical and responsible use of technology, are integral parts of Banksia Park’s ICT program. We maintain rigorous and effective practices which aim to maximise the benefits of the Internet and ICT devices /equipment for student learning, while minimising and managing any risks. Access to technology is essential if our children are to take full advantage of the benefits offered by new forms of digital learning. Providing access to this technology also affords us the opportunity to set expectations with students around appropriate use of the internet and devices like mobile phones, tablets computers and iPads.

We work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students is maintained while they are online. We also have multi-level internet monitoring throughout our school network. If you would like any further information about our Digital Technologies programs, please contact the school.

Design and Technologies

Classes participate in STEM learning projects which encourage students to be collaborative and solve open-ended problems within a real-world context.

In an increasingly technological and complex world, it is important to develop knowledge and skills to analyse and creatively respond to design and/or digital challenges. Technologies provides students with authentic learning challenges that foster curiosity, confidence, persistence, innovation, creativity, respect and cooperation supporting students to develop 21st century learning skills.
