Japanese
Learning to communicate in another language is a challenging and rewarding experience. In our increasingly interconnected world, an ability to interact with people and cultures other than our own, is an important skill to prepare our students to become understanding, capable global citizens.
Students at Banksia Park learn Japanese through an engaging languages program. The students are taught to communicate in Japanese as well as gain an understanding of Japanese cultural practices. Building on student’s intercultural understanding supports the Banksia Park motto of “friendship and knowledge” and our values including diversity and difference, encouraging openness to different experiences and perspectives.
Our teaching and learning program is aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum for Languages which has two strands: Communicating and Understanding. Emphasis is given to developing speaking and listening skills through interactive tasks including singing, role-playing and games, along with the use of resources, digital tools and literature in Japanese. To further support our languages program students can participate in Taiko Drumming and Anime Club at lunch times. An annual Japanese Assembly and dress up day further builds student understandings of the culture, histories and traditions of Japan in addition to language learning.
