Mathematics

Mathematics is organised around the interaction of three content strands from the WA Curriculum which describe what is to be taught and learnt:

  • Number & Algebra
  • Measurement & Geometry
  • Statistics & Probability

Mathematics aims to ensure that students:

  • are confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics, able to investigate, represent and interpret situations in their personal and work lives and as active citizens
  • develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes, and are able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability
  • recognise connections between the areas of mathematics and other disciplines and appreciate mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable discipline to study.

Banksia Park currently utilises Australian Signpost Maths student activity book including Signpost’s range of digital support resources to help make maths engaging. This is a sequenced and scaffolded Mathematics program implemented across the school from Year 1 to Year 6.

First Steps Number, Measurement and Chance and Data teacher resources along with Paul Swan games and manipulative materials supplement Signpost Maths student activity books.

We have excellent “hands on” mathematical resources that complement these resources. Teaching and learning supports a concrete to abstract approach and provides multiple opportunities for problem solving.

A daily mental maths program consistently and regularly provides opportunities to develop and refine mental maths skills across all major concepts for each year group from 1-6.
